In Memorium

Wednesday, August 24, 2011  It is with saddened hearts that the membership of Union Fire Company announces the passing of Life Member, and former Asistant Chief, Tommy Pallat on Monday, August the 22nd, 2011. Tommy was 71.

Born November 10, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA, Tommy joined the fire company in November of 1959, just before his ninteenth birthday. During his active years with UFC Tommy served as Treasurer, Trustee and Assistant Chief. He was granted Life Member status in 1984 after twenty five years of service. He is survived by his daughters, Tricia, with husband Todd and Denise, with husband Chris, as well as his three grand-daughters, Morgan, Kaylie and Madison, pictured with him at a family vacation in Disney just last year.

One of our fondest memories of Tommy will always be his energetic dancing to Bob Seager's " Old Time Rock and Roll " at company banquets.

Arrangements for a Memorial Service have not yet been completed.

God's Speed Tommy.

From Probie to Rookie

Monday, June 6, 2011  Many of you have followed our latest canidate's, Cindy Harris, adventures through fireschool this spring on her blog. On Monday, June 6th, at Bucks County Community College. Cindy was awarded her national certificate as a firefighter in a ceremony honoring over 80 of our county's newest firfighters. The six month course; completed with the practical skills evaluation on Sunday, June 5th; was gruelling on the diverse group of men and women of varying age groups.

Cindy commented several times during and after the event that she will miss her classmates, which underscored comments made by many of the speakers that the fire service id a unique brotherhood that allows individuals to form lasting bonds because of the committment they have made to serve their communities. While she may not see many of them on a regular basis, there will always be that special connection.

Joining Cindy on her special night were her parents, grandparents, her brother and his girlfriend and several members of Union Fire Company who turned out to show their support.

To continue the saga, the membership of the company voted to extend full membership to Ms. Harris at our meeting Tuesday, June 7th. SHe now turns in her probie shield for a firefighter shield and moves into the rank of Rookie.

CONGRATULATIONS CINDY!

Press Release

Union Fire Company of Cornwells Heights, Station 37

The Union Fire Company, Station 37 located in Bensalem Township, Bucks County is a volunteer fire company dedicated to protecting the lives, property and environment of the community it serves. The Fire Company was established in 1928. Union Fire Company has 52 members that volunteer a total of 1000 plus hours annually to protecting the residents and business owners in and around Bensalem Township.

The fire company enjoys a good working report with all of the local fire companies who routinely work as a team to fight fires in the community. The fire company responds to several hundred fires annually and has responded to 78 fires during the first three months of 2011.

On April 19, 2011 at 3:48 p.m. the Union Fire Company along with Ladder 11 of Croydon, Engine 222 of Bensalem, and Tower 16 of Bensalem responded to a reported fire at 2526 State Road, between Camer Drive and American Drive.

When Engine 37 arrived on the scene at 3:56 p.m., Ladder 11 and Tower 16 were working together at the rear of the building to open the roof and extinguish the fire using tank water from their trucks. Engine 222 was at the front of the building working to extinguish the fire from a two and one-half inch line, also using tank water from its truck. Engine 222 could not establish a water connection to the hydrant along State Road because the hydrant was not equipped with national standard threads. The hydrant was equipped with a Jones Snap Adapters, which is uncommon and with which Engine 222 was not equipped.

Upon arriving at the scene Engine 37 connected its water tank to Engine 222 to provide additional water supply. Engine 37 then began to hand stretch a five inch supply line back to the hydrant along State Road, in order to provide additional water supply. Engine 37 was equipped with the Jones Snap Adapter that was required to connect to that hydrant. Before Engine 37 established the connection to the hydrant, the fire was put under control and the wrap up of the fire was completed with the remaining tank water including water from Engine 37 and the other companies on the scene.

Union Fire Company enjoys a good working report with all other local volunteer and paid fire companies. The fire companies all work cooperatively on a routine basis as they did in the case of the fire on State Road on April 19th which was resolved in an efficient and proper manner.

The Union Fire Company can provide no explanation or insight into the rumors being circulated about any improper conduct. The fire company holds out hope that the allegation merely arose from a misunderstanding and not to cast an untrue and unfavorable light on the fire company and derail it’s efforts and enthusiasm to expand its volunteer work for the community. The Fire Company looks forward to the completion of the investigation which they are confident will reveal their continued good work as dedicated volunteers.

Snow Coming: Keep Fire Hydrants Clear!

With yet another winter storm on its way, Union Fire Company is urging residents to clear your fire hydrants of snow to ensure your family's safety and the safety of your neighbors! This will help your local fire departments quickly access hydrants while responding to a fire.

Its a simple request but it could save your life in the event of a fire during the winter months. This will help us save time during an emergency and will help us do our jobs better. Make sure when you are digging out a hydrant that you clear at least 3 feet around it and shovel down to the ground. Also, make sure surrounding roadways and sidewalks are clear.

Finally, make sure that all house numbers are cleared of snow so they are visible to emergency responders. These quick and simple tips will keep you and your neighbors safe!
