Extension Cords and Fire Safety

Here are a few quick facts about keeping your home safe from fires while using extension cords from the U.S Fire Administration and FEMA...Electrical Fire SafetyA Factsheet on Home Electrical Fire PreventionElectrical fires in our homes claim the lives of 280 Americans each year and injure 1,000 more. Some of these fires are caused by electrical system failures, but many more are caused by incorrectly installed wiring and overloaded circuits and extension cords. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) would like consumers to know that there are simple steps you can take to prevent the loss of life and property resulting from electrical fires.During a typical year, home electrical problems account for 26,100 fires and $1 billion in property losses. About half of all residential electrical fires involve electrical wiring. The ProblemDecember and January are the most dangerous months for electrical fires. Fire deaths are highest in winter months which call for more indoor activities and increases in lighting, heating, and appliance use. The bedroom is the leading area of fire origin for residential building electrical fires. However, electrical fires that begin in the living room/family room/den areas result in the most deaths. The CauseMost electrical distribution fires result from problems with "fixed wiring" such as faulty electrical outlets and old wiring. Problems with cords (such as extension and appliance cords), plugs, receptacles, and switches also cause many home electrical fires.Light fixtures and lamps/light bulbs are also leading causes of electrical fires. Many avoidable electrical fires can be traced to misuse of electric cords, such as overloading circuits, poor maintenance, and running the cords under rugs or in high traffic areas.Safety PrecautionsRoutinely check your electrical appliances and wiring.Frayed wires can cause fires. Replace all worn, old or damaged appliance cords immediately.Replace any electrical tool if it causes even small electrical shocks, overheats, shorts out, or gives off smoke or sparks.Keep electrical appliances away from wet floors and counters; pay special care to electrical appliances in the bathroom and kitchen.Buy electrical products evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory.Keep clothes, curtains, and other potentially combustible items at least three feet from all heaters. If an appliance has a three-prong plug, use it only in a three-slot outlet. Never force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.Don't allow children to play with or around electrical appliances like space heaters, irons, and hair dryers.Use safety closures to "child-proof" electrical outlets.Use electrical extension cords wisely; never overload extension cords or wall sockets.Immediately shut off, then professionally replace, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker. Finally, having a working smoke alarm dramatically increases your chances of surviving a fire. And remember to practice a home escape plan frequently with your family. If you ever have any questions concerning the safety of your family and your home, please contact your local fire department. Here are some photos of what not to do:...

Brothers For Flight 93 Memorial Ride To Shanksville, PA

This weekend 4 members of Union Fire Company had the honor to accompany members of the Brothers For Flight 93 on a memorial ride to Shanksville, PA. Each year the members of the Brothers For Flight 93 embark on a 7 hour journey to visit the memorial site where 40 brave men and women sacrificed their own lives to save the lives of others by fighting back against the hijackers on September 11th, 2001. This is an annual tradition for the brothers and this year we got to be a part of the ride. A ceremony was held on Saturday morning at the Philadelphia Prision to remember those whos lives were lost on that day. Hundreds of people gathered to pay their respects including members of the Bensalem Police Department, Members of the Philadelphia Police Department, The Rawnhurts-Bustleton Volunteer Ambulance, as well as members from Eddington Fire Company in Bensalem and American Hose, Hook and Ladder in Bristol and about 150 motorcycle riders. After the ceremony we were escorted to the PA turnpike and began our ride. Battalion Chief Dave Jerri Jr along with Firefighters Evan Carmichael, Cindy Harris and Chris Reed were the members who took part in the ride. It was a nearly 7 hour ride to Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The national memorial has not yet been completed but is expected to be finished by 2013. It is incredibly overwhelming to be there. The field is very open and very quiet. The fences are lined with american flags, flowers and patches to commemorate those whose live were lost. There is also a center where you can view photos and read stories about that day. Members of the Brothers For Flight 93 have had the honor to meet family members and friends of those who were lost at the memorial site. We also had the chance to visit the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department who were one of the first responding companies to the field. The station also holds a piece of steel from the towers that has been made into a memorial outside of the station. We are very honored and very humbled to have been a part of this experience. We have decided to make it a tradition to be a part of the convoy every year. We would like to Thank the members of Brothers For Flight 93 for allowing us to be a part of their journey. For more information on their cause or to make donations you can visit their website at www.brothersforflight93.com....
